Peace through Prayer
#1 Rejoice
Why? Because the Lord is near. He loves you and knows exactly what you need in every situation and He is willing and able to give it. He’s just waiting for you to reach out to Him. The Bible says, “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and enter His courts with praise”. This simply means that as you approach Him in prayer, do so with an attitude of gratitude. When we do this, we are sending him a faith-filled signal that we are glad to be in relationship with Him and we are trusting that He will take care of us.
#2 Don’t be anxious about anything, instead, pray about everything.
Let’s face it, we can’t stop anxious thoughts from coming into our head anymore than we can stop a bird from flying over it – but we can choose not to let the bird build a nest in our hair. In the same way, we can choose not to let anxious thoughts accumulate in our mind until they overwhelm us. Prayer gives us power over anxiety. Every time we face something that causes us to be anxious, we can choose to pray and let God replace our anxious thoughts with a peace that passes understanding.
#3 Pray
Question: When?
Answer: In every situation.
Question: How?
Answer: …”by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving”, we present our requests to God.
Let’s break it down:
- Prayer is simply talking with God.
- The Greek word translated “petition” in this verse means “a heartfelt request arising out of deep personal need”. In other words – God wants you to pour out your heart to Him so that He can respond to you out of His love and compassion.
- With thanksgiving present your request to God.
Question: What are we thanking Him for?
Answer: First, we are thanking Him for being near us in our time of need. Next, we are thanking Him for every good thing in our life that we can think of! We really do have much to be thankful for. Think about it! Finally, we are thanking Him in advance for hearing us and helping us.
Question: Why are we thanking Him?
Answer: When we reflect on what we have to be thankful for, we remember how good God has been to us and we remember how He has taken care of us in the past. When we remember and give thanks, we open ourselves up to God and He gives us His peace.
#4 Think about something other than the situation / problem.
God’s instructions always lead us to the healthiest course of action with the greatest positive outcome. We call the outcome a blessing. If you are breathing, you have discovered by now that anything we dwell on will affect us mentally, emotionally and even physically. After we have prayed and we have received peace, we want His peace to remain in us and God tells us exactly how to do that.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
Much has been said about “the power of positive thinking”, but the truth is, when we do our part in following these steps, God does His part and we experience something more valuable than anything money can buy and it is found in both verses 7 & 9 of Philippians 4.
“The peace of God, which transcends all understanding will be with you. His peace will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.”
As you are trusting God with your situation or circumstance, remember this above all things – He is a good Father and He really does love you!
